This map is the result of a 3 day hike with the West Virginia Highlands Conservancy and
the Sierra Club.
Forest Service Trails
The established trails, South Prong Trail, Roaring Plains Trail, and Boar's Nest Trail,
are well described in reference Sundquist and
de Hart.
Pipeline Route
The pipe line route leading from FS 70 is quite obvious, and the turn off of the pipe
line to the left occurs just as the pipe line begins to fall sharply from the ridge
crest.
Named RR grade and Another Time
The items marked "Nameless RR grade" and "Another Time" need more explanation. The
group was exploring to find an extension to the Roaring Plains trail. We had a good
start on an old railroad grade, but did not find the road branching off to the west.
By the time our error became evident, we had lost significant elevation.
Thus the abandoned and overgrown road waits for another time.
