Virginia Journeys 2011 Hike Maps

The tables below provides reference data for the hikes that are part of Virginia Journeys 2011, the ATC's Biennial Conference in 2011. This information is provided to give better information on each hike to people not familiar with this region of south-western Virginia.
The columns in the table provide the following data
  • title of the hike including its location
  • mileage of the hike
  • links to trail map on Google Maps
  • links to a data file of trail coordinates
  • dates and times for each hike
Color coding used in the tables
   • Family hikes
   • Easy hikes
   • History and nature hikes
   • Moderately difficult
   • Strenuous or very strenuous

Using the Map Links

Clicking a Link entry in the Map Link column should open another window showing the hike route on a Google Maps page. Make sure that your browser(IE, Firefox, etc) allows pop-up windows for at least this site. With Google Maps you can zoom into location along the route and then pan along the trail. For more details see the Maps Help page.

Using the Map Data files

Clicking a Data entry in the Map Data column will download the coordinate data for the hike route. The map data are kmz files (compressed kml). These can be imported into various mapping programs including the free Google Earth.

Using the street views

For an increasing number of streets and highways, Google Maps includes continuous photographs taken at car level. If available these can show parking or trail access points. Sometimes another hike will have the street view at the other end of the hike.
